Escape to New York

A funny thing happened on our way to the NY campsite. I was certain that we were staying on Staten Island, but our cabin was booked in Heckscher State Park, on Long island. This took us a couple of hours out of our way. When I called to confirm we would be late, the nice woman on the phone said, "Oh yes, cottage 7 is waiting for you."
We arrived 15 minutes before the office closed. Then we went out and got us a fancy steak dinner we couldn't afford. My baked potato was the size of a man's foot.
The cottage was not a hotel. We weren't provided with bedding, towels or a television. Nevertheless, the accomodations were lovely, and we came prepared with our own gear. I got a chance to catch up on my work which I found oddly relaxing.
We also combed through the car looking to shed bulk. Packing the car in Tolland was time consuming, and this wouldn't be sustainable if we were going to be doing it on a regular basis. We were able to jettison a large bag of cardboard packing that made re repacking the car a mite bit easier when we departed.
Oliver and I both love New York, but we had never visited Ellis island and the Statue of Liberty before. These were inspiring destinations, and at the Statue of Liberty we even climbed all the way into the pedestal for a better view of our surroundings. It really made you think about how lucky we are in the US that people from all over the world are willing to leave their homes to come here for a better life.
After two nights at our cabin we were off again. The pace is demanding. I am still questioning my physical ability to make this happen. I can feel my appetite waning naturally as I opt for survival. Being fat is uncomfortable. I need to be nimble if I'm going to make it. Ollie's banter is keeping my spirits up. Time once again to hit the road...
I love this! Ellis island is a very magical place. I visited many years ago and took a pic of liberty from the window. It was the idea of being almost free for so many!
